Welcome to Oakwood School

We are pleased that you are interested in learning more about what we call “The Oakwood Experience” and how our child centered program addresses the needs of bright students as well as those with mild to moderate learning differences. At Oakwood, we view each child as an individual and are committed to find what works best for them.

Our admission team works collaboratively with the families: we seek to learn about your child as you learn about our school. Our goal is to ensure that Oakwood creates the right fit for your child’s needs.

We believe in the power of a nurturing environment. Oakwood works as a team including the students, teachers, support staff and professionals to create a family like community to nuture the child holistically.

We focus on developing the whole child. We believe that formal learning must be accompanied by developing a lifestyle attitude. Sleep patterns, wholesome food, monitored activities, tradition and values, etiquette, confidence building, compassion for others and for oneself and a holistic approach to life are important aspects of growing up for today’s children in an ever-changing family environment.

Boarding enables parents to live a guilt free work life, knowing that their child is being nurtured in a homely, stress free environment for overall personality development. Holidays then are entirely devoted to the family and bonding and the child’s progress can be visibly noticed. Attention to a child’s overall development is at the core of this program.

Be there –when people need you- set aside distraction and judgments- to be fully present is a sign of respect

Choose your attitude– choose how you respond to life, not just react. Moment to moment awareness is key. Help the people who depend on you. Help yourself to be more effective.

Make your daysimple gestures of thoughtfulness, thanks and recognition make people feel appreciated and valued. When you make someone else feel good, you feel good too

Playit is a mindset that allows you to throw yourself with enthusiasm and creativity into whatever you are doing in a way that is natural and not forced.

We believe in the worth of the individual. We believe that each child is created with a unique potential. Oakwood unlocks the potential in each child by recognizing and addressing his or her challenges while discovering and developing personal strengths.

We focus on developing the whole child- our social/effective lessons focus on understanding the brain and how we learn, as well as how we want to act with each other in our school community. We reinforce that we all have learning needs and challenges as well as areas in which we excel. Recognizing and appreciating these differences in each other is important for our learning community.

We believe in the strength of tradition in our values and our teaching.

We give special attention to school, family and friends.

We respect our environment and pledge to do our best to use it sensibly and for propensity.

We believe in the continual pursuit of excellence and effectiveness.

Oakwood integrates innovative educational strategies and technology to empower students to become effective learners.

The Primary program (Nursery To Class 1)

Developing strong foundational skills in reading and mathematics is at the heart of the primary program.

Manipulative and multisensory activities provide the basis of teaching methods at this level. Attention to a students’ overall development is at the core of this program. The use of movement programs and practical learning help the students to develop good skills for recognizing and monitoring their need for movement to improve learning. Sensory integration activities are built into the primary schedule as routine activity. Our teachers teach small groups of children which allows for individual attention.

Our teachers understand the development continuum and use our scope and sequence of skills to guide students to improve their written communication. Handwriting instruction begins with correct formation of printed letters. Efficient keyboarding and effective use of a computer are essential parts of our program and directly tied to instruction in written language. Math instructions occur in small homogeneous groups of students at an appropriate instructional level. Some of our students are strong in maths while others are challenged by the subject. Students practice math facts in many ways to understand and solve problems. The children are also introduced to the sciences and secondary languages

Our middle school program focuses on preparing our students for a variety of high school options, while continuing to remediate and reinforce each student’s foundational skills in all areas of strategic learning. We facilitate an attitude of responsibility towards learning by allowing our students to develop independence in applying learning strategies to all subjects Our middle school children also have an opportunity to develop leadership skills as representatives and office bearers of the school. We also work with parents to help them find the best possible fit for their child after they graduate from Oakwood.
